2017 marks the 70th anniversary of a certain automaker that tends to generate passion among car fans just like no other. Synonymous with the colour red, this automaker also appears to possess the most prosperous team in Formula One. Have you guessed it? The automaker is none other than Ferrari. Since the official watchmaking spouse of Ferrari, Hublot introduced the Hublot Techframe Ferrari 70 Years Tourbillon Chronograph watch to mark the occasion earlier this season, but this really is a new one-off version made from PEEK Carbon and King Gold. The venture of Hublot and Ferrari is into its fifth year and has produced a lot of Hublot’s most audacious and remarkable pieces such as the Hublot MP-09 Tourbillon Bi-Axis (hands-on) watch and the Hublot MP-05 LaFerrari watch (hands-on with the sapphire case version), in addition to more familiar Hublot fare like Big Bang Ferrari (such as the model we reviewed here) editions. The Hublot Techframe Ferrari 70 Years Tourbillon Chronograph watch was unveiled earlier this year (hands-on), along with the particular version in the stuff you see here has been made as a one-off piece for auction. It is a technically impressive view, of course, with a chronograph function and tourbillon escapement. Produced in collaboration with Ferrari, the resulting watch, with its architectural and bridge-like situation layout, looks unlike any other Hublot watch before it.So what is unique about this particular watch? The Hublot Techframe Ferrari 70 Years Tourbillon Chronograph view was originally produced in three variants — King Gold, ceramic, and PEEK carbon — that were limited to 70 pieces each. This variant, however, uses a blend of PEEK carbon and King Gold together. The skeleton framework that shields the instance is made from ultra light and strong PEEK carbon, although the case itself consists of King Gold. King Gold is the name of a ceramic and gold metal developed by Hublot that includes a richer red colour compared to typical 5N red gold and can be much more challenging and more scratch-resistant.
To mark the 30th anniversaries of the Hong Kong offices of both Ferrari and Hublot, the watchmaker has created a limited edition Hublot Big Bang Ferrari Hong Kong with a distinctive red ceramic bezel.
Since its inauguration last year, Hublot’s partnership with Ferrari has produced a slew of limited edition timepieces, the latest of which is the Hublot Big Bang Ferrari Hong Kong. It is fitted with a bright red ceramic bezel, which Hublot says is the first time a brightly coloured ceramic has been used in a timepiece. The sapphire case back features the Hong Kong 30th anniversary logo, referring to both Hublot and Ferrari, which simultaneously mark 30 years in Hong Kong this year.
The rest of the watch is standard Big Bang – a 45.5 mm black ceramic case with resin and carbon bits and bobs. The movement is the modular and in-house UNICO flyback calibre. And the watch is delivered with rubber two straps covered in Schedoni leather (the supplier of Ferrari leather goods), easily interchangeable via the seat-belt buckle inspired buttons on the lugs.
30 pieces of the Hublot Big Bang Ferrari Hong Kong will be made, with the price yet to be announced. But with the recently launched Big Bang Ferrari Singapore edition retailing for about US$38,000, expect this to be in the same range. – SJX
